You can absolutely argue that DISCO incorporates too much emotion with their characters (something I agree with to an extent), but I do appreciate how much more real these characters feel compared to past characters (especially in the early seasons of TNG). I gave this dumpster fire of far left propaganda 4 seasons. The message she is sending how? Thats kind of what I was playing with. I wonder if there is any news that she might be pregnant. Be sure to watch Mary Wiseman "Killying it" as Ensign Sylvia Tilly on Star Trek: Discovery. I dont believe any of the other series had a therapist on the bridge. And CBS posted some images of Emperor Georgious quarters on the ISS Discovery. Im sure nearly everyone of the crew of TNG had issues and problems. Theres a difference between celebrating obesity and accepting individual human beings, treating them as human beings, and not targeting them specifically for emotional harassment. After Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Tilly (Mary Wiseman) journey to a planet alongside Burnham's mother Gabrielle (Sonja Sohn), things get a little hairy when the Qowat Milat nun they're . Two Kelpians and a Disco Kenny (Zero Kelpians were harmed during this shoot. Mary Wiseman (born July 30, 1985) is an American actress. Internationally, the series is available on Paramount+ in Australia, Latin America and the Nordics, and on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany . CBS/Paramount+ For Wiseman's Tilly, the danger and near-loss of all the cadets, including Adira (Blu del Barrio) forces her. And for your own gain, right? I like seeing her in the series and like knowing that girls who are considered chunky by their teen or tween peers will know they can become something special and respectable, even if they dont have the ideal Hollywood body type. After his first episode or two, I was done with Barclay and was frustrated when he came back, and especially when he showed up on Voyager. When Mary Wisemans Lt. Sylvia Tilly left the USS Discovery for a job at the new Starfleet Academy in the fourth episode of season four, it was promised she would be back. I have this image in my head of the EPs saying to Mack that theyd like species that havent been main characters in other shows and asking him to give a list of options for a big and strong species, a species without a bianary gender etc. I think people need that kind of thing to heal. I realize there are people who like his quirks. She opted that she had a different calling within the world of teaching and, in the end, she decided that she wanted to chase that feeling. Key difference in thinking, and it makes all the difference in the big picture! . I believe we can thank Mack for helping the Showrunners and writers identify species that would work in Prodigy and for some deep cuts. After they wrote her to be the most annoying person possible. )Granted, I think the special effects, space battles, bizarre technology and explosions are the proverbial tail wagging the dog, but thats always been the case, and is increasingly expected in these post-Star Wars, high tech decades. It is not yet known what role, if any, Wisemans Tilly would have in the upcoming season, with possibilities ranging from guest or recurring character to becoming a series regular again. And thats a healthy outlook. American actress Mary Wiseman was born on July 30, 1985. Its could have (or couldve). I did, though. Finally, Starfleet isn't a military organisation or an army. Tilly got fat, that is inexcusable. Originally I imagined him as Denzel Washington or Blair Underwood, but after belatedly watching The Wire and Luther I think Idris Elba would be a really good match. Do I want to be Barclay or Harry Kim? It seems like people like her say: this is me. You two are Michaels boyfriend and best friend, so does Michael becoming captain create any new tension in season four? Shes not going anywhere. I would ask our family doctor, Is there anything you can give me thatll make me gain weight?'. The U.S.S. Sonequa Martin-Green in Unification III, Co-showrunner Michelle Paradise shared some behind-the-scenes photos from Terra Firma, Part 2.. It is not OK to be overweight. My only issue with Captain Killy is that she died that wonderful red hair blonde. Probably some admirals cousin. She was annoying to me, and the crew gave her a lot of leeway. Even Picard has his own show. Star Trek is supposed to be socially progressive but this show went too far. They made an insensitive statement about her body and called her a promoter of an unhealthy lifestyle. Age is affecting my memory haha. And it could fit nicely with Chakotays story on the show and that hes also in the DQ for the mission and now has to find the ship. The Trek Collective has a flowchart for the Litverse which is helpful. And Tilly is the Trekkie. Wait I havent watched season 4, nor will I ever after the stupidity that was season 3 But now shes a leader at the academy?! Im sure many may NOT be a Janeway but could at least look at her and say thats what I aspire to be. And over the last couple of years, so have I. Im still not fond of the gory, violent Klingon business of the first couple of seasons, but I slowly began to see DISCO anew. Waste of talent. all the outfits here are golden IMO but those shoes murder! Im relieved to say I have no idea how that feels, and its something I cant even stomach thinking about, frankly. Typical. But respect is always earned and never enforceable. Bullied badly as a child and teen so I know what I speak of; Im just glad I grew up pre-Internet, and I sympathize with any nowadays who have to deal with Internet bullying on top of real world bullying. ;). BTW, I know this is waaaaaay off topic, but since you are the literary Trek lover on this site and keep up with a lot of the books, do you think Prodigy is going to use some of Kirsten Beyers Full Circle Voyager story lines? Mary Wiseman is sending the message that your body is your own, your responsibility, and nobody elses business, not any sort of health and fitness message. Since season one, Tilly (Mary Wiseman). I wasnt complaining there were therapists on board. This is why Discovery is polarising and this is why people four seasons in still dislike Burnham and Tilly as characters. They seemed to only be limited by what that particular script called for that week. Lol. Ive learned a lot of bad spelling comes from dictating into your smartphone. I even got a t-shirt that says DISCO on it, which prompts inquiries about my musical tastes of past decades when I was a twenty-something, lol. You misunderstood. However, I do struggle with popular media normalizing unhealthy weights whether over or underweight because they are health risks. Up ahead, we explain what happened to Tilly in the recent episode and also discuss actor Mary Wiseman's status on the show. As you put it: I love how Disco has put the human back into the human experience. And I agree wholeheartedly. I understand the actress is very well-respected and a nice person, but I couldnt stand the Tilly character myself. Make better choices. Its been sooo inconsistent from day one. Everybody loves is an idiom, it should never be taken as a strict statement. WTF this is why Ive been following Star Trek since the original in 1967 when I saw Nichelle Nichols. But to play the Devils Advocate here for a moment Tilly as she was originally presented and continued to be for quite some time is not something most women would aspire to be I should think. You either think about what you can contribute to society or how society owes you handouts, respect for above-mentioned bad habits, fictitious pronouns even. I love how Disco has put the human back into the human experience. Remember , they had steroids and thyroid problems in the 80's, but the majority of people were off normal weight, which today would be called skinny. She is best known for starring as Sylvia Tilly in the Paramount+ science fiction drama series Star Trek: Discovery (2017-present). Its so brutal. Its shall we say very variable. All are Trek! Its not SMGs fault of course, its just the way she has be written throughout the series. Have you ever read those? For your own good, please seek help. She never wouldve made it through the Academy. I always felt that I wanted hips and a butt. What do you think it looks like? Maybe sociological issues? She is relatable and human and wonderful. Obviously I dont know what M. Wiseman is like. That is definitely not a true statement. Should the nice girl get off your lawn? The actors are not slaves to the fans or public opinion. In general, the Litverse kicks off with the TNG A Time to series that fills in events between the movies Insurrection and Nemesis. Most of what she did was convey the amazingly obvious like offering such useful insights such as, Hes concealing something but I dont know what. And her abilities were never fully defined. Too nervous and anxious. By the way, could of isnt English. Biography Tilly is not a perfect officer. Sonequa is a great actress. It feels the only reason was to have a non-binary character, which after a few episodes ended up fading into the background with the rest of the furniture anyway. Just more pandering. Thanks for the heads up about Beyer and the Voyager books. Where are they!? I would imagine those who liked Barclay probably include a large portion of those who like Tilly. If that scene reflects something she regularly incorporates into her real-life, then I think she will be just fine and she can tell the haters to go pound salt. They just didnt do much with him. In this week's episode of Star Trek: Discovery season four, we saw Tilly leaving her crew and heading to the academy in order to foster young minds. Youre saying she isnt believeable because she sounds like she has a 21st century *accent*? Look at the progression of Nog on DS9 from Quarks juvenile-delinquent nephew in season 1 to Starfleet Ensign in the Dominion War on how writers can make you believe in a characters growth and progression. A person who we see strive to make themselves a better person. In fact, it says far more about the body-shamers than it does about those being body-shamed. Basically a good officer whos been in Starfleet for some years but her career stalled due to emotional and self-esteem issues. Just mentioning few of their values. Nice girl but still jostling with Burnham as the most annoying character on the show. My condolences to you, for your mum. Thats undeniable. I think Saru will just be the surrogate first officer again although he is now a captain. It just came to me and wanted your opinion. I would just be happy if Rhys got more than three lines an episode lol. Keep up the great work ladies! The fourth episode of the new season of Star Trek: Discovery ("All is Possible") arrived this morning and it has fans buzzing about Lt. Sylvia Tilly. Wasnt it Saru who made Tilly the First Officer? Tilly is a Harry Kim, Wesley Crusher, Travis Mayweather sort of character at least for me. I dont see a repeated notion that DISCO saved Trek by heavily incorporating emotion into their characters. That does so much emotional damage to a personbut it also says a lot about those doing the body-shaming. Jake is about 45-50 and one of the two lead characters. He was competing in show jumping events with his horses until at least his 70s. Star Trek: Discovery streams exclusively on CBS All Access in the United States and is distributed concurrently by CBS Studios . That said, the stolid approach to characterization has its benefits as well when an emotional outburst happens it can be devastating (see: Picards breakdowns in the likes of Family, Chain of Command, First Contact), but it also allows for subtler moments to have outsized impacts (Odo asking Garak to breakfast, Seven revealing her favorite color, Picards 1/4 smiles when no one is looking, Spocks eyebrow etc), which is also quite true to life. Its good to have ALL type of people/stories in our Star Trek Universe. I think Saru holds out as being the most consistent, and Tilly is close, but not quite. And now, with only three years under her belt in the field, only two of which were as a ranked officer, they think shes somehow ready to train the next generation of recruits?! I lovvvve Lilly/Tilly and her curves. All you ever do on this board is show up and attack womxn for being womxn, LBGTQ+ for being LBGTQ+, people of color for being people of color. Xanadu? In a Paramount+ featurette (which you can see below) about the making of the episode, Wiseman talks about how Tilly has changed: Coming back for the finale was really exciting for me because she comes back in this fully black Starfleet suit. That promise was. Season 4 sees Sonequa Martin-Green's, Michael Burnham, return with her. Just when it looks like the character has finally grown as a person and doing her own thing, comes right back. Its all relative, but I dont see a lot of actors being body-shamed. Youve got to hand it to Harry Kim. I keep reading that no character like hers should not be in starfleet, yet she is. Body shaming is wrong and immature. Like damn the guy's 90 ffs give him a break. Makes sense. This is a part of the reason people cant take to them, alongside their poorly written characters. I cant stand any sentence (especially related to DSC) which starts off with Everybody loves Its never true. I agree, the writing, character development, and story telling needs to improve. Mary Wiseman claims that she wants to inspire all the curvy women around the world with her Star Trek weight gain story. KevinB: I let go of my preconceptions about what star trek is.. Im glad you figured out what works for you, but Im not cool with a Star Trek board in 2021 focusing on an actors weight or appearance, especially when its a man commenting on a womans weight. In the season four finale Coming Home, Mary Wiseman returned as Lt. Tilly, now a Starfleet Academy leader working with cadets and Admiral Vance to coordinate the evacuation and defense of Earth on Federation HQ. Even though he is one of the worst characters in Trek, he was the main focus in arguably the best episode of Voyager: Timeless. Mary Wiseman is confirmed to return as Sylvia Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, although whether she rejoins the crew or continues at Starfleet Academy and only interjects occasionally remains unknown. The entire point of Tillys character is that shes a Starfleet officer that doesnt have to be a supermodel like so many Trek characters before: Troi, Seven, TPol, Jadzia perfect golden cut supermodels. Im not surprised people making mean comments, some people will find whatever they can that they know will upset everyone and say it. Theres a little Harley Quinn. Also, quite likely theyre pointing her towards a bigger role in their upcoming Academy show, when she does want the work of tv again. You always come up with weird posts VS this one is weirder than usual Im afraid to say. I dont think youre ready for that kind of interaction, online, or anywhere else. Not holding my breath hes given the job though, especially since we know Saru is coming back. The episode, titled "All Is Possible,". A rare, successful example of this is James Gunns Guardians otG and Suicide Squad, in which a similar premise is treated comedically yet with a touch of sincerity, so as not to devolve into outright farce. No one can be expected to sugarcoat reality for you, and your attitude to people who dont is very indicative that you need someone to help you with that. No it says a lot about the incredibly dangerous message she is sending. All are different.
